Senators move boldly for legislative transparency

Good for S.C. Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler, R-Cherokee, and the doughty band of Senate Republicans who believe that the long era of secrecy in S.C. lawmaking must end. Local Sens. Ray Cleary, R-Murrells Inlet, and Luke Rankin, R-Myrtle Beach, are among senators backing Peeler’s bill to let ordinary South Carolinians in on how the General Assembly handles their tax money. Under present Senate rules and recently revised House rules, legislators too easily can obscure money-handling decisions and positions with which their constituents may disagree.
